Capital E Earth
by Ann-Giselle Spiegler

Cast in Order of Appearance :
Bill – Male, Age 20-30, Any race, Not a writer.
Angie – Female, Age 20-30, Any race, A writer.

A modern day living room with a couch and small table with a couple of chairs. ANGIE is seated at the table, behind a laptop, trying to write. It isn’t going too well. BILL sits on the couch, also behind a screen, playing a game.

BILL
(Agitated) C’mon you little maggot, come on! Closer, closer, closer...there! THERE! I GOT YOU! I GOT YOU MAGGOT! I AM THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE!

He jumps up off the couch and does a little
grinding dance. While he dances...

BILL
I AM THE M ASTER OF THE UNIVERSE! I AM THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE! FEAR ME!!!

ANGIE
(Annoyed) Will you keep it down, I am trying to write, here!

She stares blankly at the screen.

BILL
(Beat.) I can see that.

ANGIE
Well, your “M aster of the Universe “ dance derailed my train of thought and great art
takes concentration!

BILL
Oh the loss to the legacy of literature. How will we ever recover? I know! I will interpret
the loss in a dance.

He begins his dance again.

ANGIE
Oh my God! Are you twelve? Stop it!

BILL
I would stop, but I AM THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE!!!

ANGIE
I am never gonna get this done!

BILL
(Interested, stops dancing) What is it about this time?

ANGIE
The Earth.

BILL
Like, the Earth earth, or like...dirt.

ANGIE
Like, the Earth Earth. Capital E Earth.

BILL
Ooooh. Heavy then. Im-port-ant.

ANGIE
You could say that. Or, I SHOULD be saying that. If I could figure out what to write.

BILL
Come ON Ange...you loooove that “Save the Earth, SHE is our Mother” hippy-dippy shizz. You haven’t eaten meat since the FIRST Clinton administration, your car is powered by fuel that used to cook french fries and I am pretty sure the compost pile in the back yard is going to qualify us as a duplex pretty soon ! This should be cake for you. Non GMO, cruelty free, no honey bees were harmed in the making of this cake, cake! Hurry up and finish it so we can order a pizza and I can shred your virtual corpse in a post apocalyptic non-recyclable world! (Doing his grinding right in her face as he says this..) Because I AM THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE!

PlayGround-LA Dec 12 Holiday Extravaganza!

Come celebrate the holidays PlayGround-style on Monday, December 12 at the Zephyr Theatre with the latest round in our Monday Night PlayGround staged reading series. This month’s topic is “Nutcracker, Sweet!” PlayGround-LA playwrights have just four-and-a-half days to generate their original short scripts and the top six works will be presented as script-in-hand staged readings on Monday, December 12 at the Zephyr Theatre. For more information, online tickets and discount flex pass subscriptions, visit http://playground-la.org/monday.

Ten days before the designated Monday, a topic is announced and the thirty-six playwrights in the PlayGround-LA Writers Pool have until 2pm the following Tuesday to submit a short script. A panel of judges selects six winners, whose entries are cast over the weekend and then rehearsed with the area’s best professional actors and directors in a whirlwind ninety minutes each before being performed as script-in-hand staged readings. Previous topics include “Origin Story”, “Sea-Change”, “Holiday Spirit”, “We Hold These Truths to be Self-Evident”, and last month’s “Awakening to the Dream of the Earth.”

PlayGround-LA is the first regional expansion of the celebrated Bay Area playwright incubator and theatre community hub, PlayGround(SF). PlayGround was launched in San Francisco in 1994 by co-founders Jim Kleinmann, Brighde Mullins and Denise Shama. In 1996, Kleinmann became PlayGround’s first Artistic Director. Since its founding, PlayGround has developed and staged over 800 original ten-minute plays by nearly 300 Bay Area and Los Angeles early-career writers and has commissioned/developed 61 full-length plays by distinguished PlayGround alumni, premiering more than 21 of these through PlayGround’s innovative New Play Production Fund. In the process of staging those works, PlayGround has helped to identify some of the leading emerging writers and, at the same time, has engendered the creation of a true community of theatre artists, bringing together hundreds of local actors, directors and playwrights.
