October People's Choice Award

The people have spoken... This month's People's Choice Award goes to Ron Burch for his original short play, The Origin Story of Lewis Hackett, presented as a staged reading at the PlayGround-LA Monday Night PlayGround season opener at the Zephyr Theatre last Monday. Congratulations, Ron!

Courtesy of Mr. Burch, we're pleased to share the first two pages from the award-winning script. Enjoy!

THE ORIGIN STORY OF LEWIS HACKETT
by Ron Burch

MIKE -- male, 20s, any race
ADAM -- male, 20s, any race
POLLY -- female, 20s, any race
LEWIS -- male, 30s, any race
NANCY -- female, 30s, any race

An office. Two simple locations. On one side of
the stage -- a desk with a chair or two. On the
other side, two chairs. Around the desk stand
two men and a woman: MIKE, ADAM, and
POLLY. They’re all holding coffee mugs.

MIKE
. . . I still can’t believe Lewis Hackett got the promotion. Where’d that guy come from?

POLLY
He worked in sales. What about all of us? We’re more qualified.

ADAM
I can’t believe Nancy gave it to him..

MIKE
I should have gotten that promotion.

POLLY
You? I was next in line.

ADAM
Where did that guy come from?

MIKE
You know what I heard? I heard they met in a bar.

LEWIS enters followed by NANCY. They cross to the two chairs.

LEWIS
Could I buy you a drink?

NANCY
Sure.

LEWIS
Want to fuck?

NANCY
Okay.

LEWIS
I need a job.

NANCY
If you’re good, you’re getting the promotion.

POLLY
That’s not what I heard. I heard it was a restaurant.

LEWIS
Could I buy you an entree?

NANCY
Sure.

LEWIS
Want to fuck?

NANCY
Okay. And if you’re good, you’re getting the promotion.

MIKE
No, no, no. Stop being petty, you guys. I heard it was nepotism.

ADAM
Really?

MIKE
Yeah, they’re related or something.
